A Journey Through Time
Trout River Pond sits at the base of the majestic Tablelands, the most important geological feature in Gros Morne National Park. The type of rocks found in the Tablelands are found in only a few other places on Earth. The Trout River Pond Boat Tour provides a unique opportunity for visitors to Gros Morne to experience "A Journey Through Time", a 2-hour narrated tour of discovery representing a 500 million year period in the evolution of our planet.

Trout River Pond is actually a 15 square kilometer landlocked fjord separated into two long lakes and joined at The Narrows. The Lower Pond is 30 meters deep and the Upper Pond plunges to more than 100 meters. There are speckled trout, Atlantic salmon, American eels and sticklebacks in the Pond and moose, woodland caribou and bears are frequently spotted along the shoreline.
When the continents of North America and Africa collided, a great slab of oceanic crust and the underlying mantle rock was forced to the surface. This orange and brown colored landscape is the Tablelands, an untamed area of natural wonder located in the south sector of Gros Morne National Park.

Trout River Pond was formed by glaciers over two million years ago. "A Journey Through Time" will follow the path that glaciers took when they plowed through this valley on their way to the sea. Visitors will experience traveling down through the crust of the ancient Earth, and burrowing deep into what was the mantle rock. The tour will combine the magnificent natural heritage of Gros Morne National Park with a unique educational experience based on the geology of theTablelands and the tremendous forces that have shaped this rugged land.
Motor coach operators and other guests can access the boat tour from the Park’s day use area on the shore of Trout River Pond. A large parking lot is located within fifty meters of the boat launch. The boarding facilities are designed to accommodate seniors and those guests with disabilities with relative ease.
